WaySight - Handheld Operator Control Unit for Unmanned Vehicles

TORC's WaySight™ is a handheld operator control unit with easy to use "sight-and-click" functionality, effectively controlling your system. The WaySight is lightweight and portable, simplified for easy operation, can work in GPS-denied environments with strong accuracy, and is fully JAUS interoperable for compatibility with other JAUS enabled devices.

  • Reduce Time on Terminal: By looking through a monocular scope, users place the cross-hairs on a target and click a button to wirelessly command an autonomous vehicle to the target location.

  • Handheld Size: Weighing several pounds, the WaySight OCU is handheld and portable.

  • GPS-Denied Operation: The WaySight™ can operate in a GPS-denied environment. Typical target accuracies are several meters at ranges of 200 meters.

  • JAUS Interoperable: The WS-110 is JAUS interoperable which
ensures plug-and-play integration with other JAUS interoperable
    devices

Overview

The WaySight™ is a handheld monocular device with built-in sensors and wireless communications that is used for localizing and commanding a target waypoint to an Unmanned System. The operator sights a target, such as a suspected IED, by placing the WaySight™ crosshairs on a nearby navigation target. Once sighted, the operator depresses a button on the WaySight™ and the target waypoints are wirelessly transmitted to a JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) mission planner such as the TORC AutonoNav™.

The AutonoNav is a JAUS interoperable SUGV payload that enables autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance in SUGVs such as the Packbot, Matilda, and Talon. Once the autonomous system receives the target waypoint from the WaySight™, it drives the Unmanned System to the target waypoints. By fusing the functionalities of the WaySight™ and an autonomous package such as the AutonoNav, an EOD Technician can sight and command a SUGV to travel to an IED with minimal time on terminal.

Key Features Include:

  • Easy-to-use: "Sight-and-Click" functionality ensures that the WaySight™ operator control unit is easy-to-use.

  • Reduce Time on Terminal: By looking through a monocular scope, users place the cross-hairs on a target and click a button to wirelessly command an autonomous vehicle to the target location.

  • Handheld Size: While many operator control units are heavy and bulky, the WaySight™ weighs a couple of pounds and fits in the palm of the hand for extreme portability.

  • Precision Localization: Accurate sensors and novel algorithms ensure pin-point precision in localizing targets. Typical accuracy is 1-2 meters.

  • GPS-Denied Operation: The WaySight™ uses proprietary sensors and algorithms to operate in GPS-denied areas, such as urban environments. Typical target accuracies are several meters at ranges of 200 meters.

  • Wireless: Integrated wireless communications allows the WaySight™ to communicate with unmanned systems and payloads miles away.

  • JAUS Interoperable: The WaySight™ is interoperable with other JAUS unmanned systems and payloads.
